Fun Story from Barksdale Labradoodles, Christy Nickelson and Rosie
Creature in the Sky
or
Mom's Faux Paw
Hi, my name is Rosie, a 2 year old multi-gen Australian Labradoodle, and this is a true tale.
One evening a couple of weeks ago, as I was taking my nightly constututional in mom's backyard, I saw something above me. It wasn't a bird flying to its nest, or a squirrel walking on top of the brick wall, or even a chipmunk climbing the ivy on the wall. I've hunted all of them with no luck in catching any. I'd never encountered a creature like this before.
It glided above me and then started to fly closer. I began to jump. (If I do say so myself, I can reach great heights, when mom throws my ball over my head. I'm quite tenacious.) Anyway, I jumped and jumped, and it swooped and dove, but I just couldn't catch it. Really, I was quite put out, because this thing seemed to be laughing at me. About that time mom called me in for bed, and I went reluctantly.
The next night I went outside as usual and immediately headed for the side of the house where I'd last seen this flying object. No sooner had I done my business than there it was again. Taunting me! This time I was ready. It swooped, and I leaped and caught it. Oh, the pride I felt! Why, I couldn't wait to get back up onto the porch to show mom my prize. I layed it down carefully and then let mom know I wanted in. She came to the door, but she didn't even turn on the light to look. Bummer! - Oh, well, she did ask me why I was licking my chops. (Must have had a bit of blood in my mouth.)
In the morning we arose as usual. Mom started to open the back door, but she faltered. I began to bark to try to tell her, "Look at my trophy. See what a good hunter I am." She just froze and kept staring out at the porch. She even took me out the front door to tinkle. I had to stay in the house, while mom went all the way around the house, through the gate, to see what I had killed. She even poked at it.
Did she let me get near it again. Noooo! She swept it up, and put it in the trash. My prize, gone without another sniff. I must say mom did make up for her faux pas by petting me and praising me for the heroic effort it must have taken to catch a BAT.
Rosie's Mom did check with the Vet and was assured that since her Shots were all up to date there was no risk to her health. Rosie and her Mom live in Huntsville, Al.
