Our second newsletter brings us into Spring with some important new health tests now available :
HEALTH INFORMATION UPDATES
prcdPRA - Progressive Retinal Atrophy - Optigen now provides an easy DNA test which will definitively show if a dog is affected or a carrier.
The ALA in Australia were the first dog association in the world to make prcdPRA testing a compulsory and mandatory test requirement of their breeders. The ILA will also be doing compulsory testing and hopes to provide these tests for breeders.
Kathy of Jersey Doodles contacted Optigen and was informed that there is a newly available test for Golden Retrievers.
DNA Canine Heritage Breed Test - MMI Genomics has a new test available to genetically determine the breed composition of your dog.
*INTERESTING NOTE - Krista Waitz, Rainmaker Ranch, ILA Executive, worked with MMI Genomics and with the ALAA provided 30 blood samples during the company's early test stages.
vWD (von Willebrand's ) in Golden Retrievers - recently a breeder had a Goldendoodle breeding dog test positive for vWD, proof positive it is indeed a disease carried in Golden Retriever lines. However, according to a health survey done by the Golden Retriever Club of America, the incidence of vWD in Golden Retriever is less than 1%.
Thyroid Problems in Golden Retrievers - this same survey has also shown extremely high incidence of thyroid problems, even higher than HD. According to the GRCA survey -
358 out of 1444 had hypothyroidism or hypathyroidism - 25.6%
