Black dogs can carry a recessive genes for silver or blue,  and the pup can fade to silver, or will be born with a bluish tint to the coat and have blue-grey colored pigment.  Black dogs that carry the silver gene, usually begin  turning silver at  7 weeks of age.

All dogs with at least one “B” and at least one “E” will be Black: BBEe, BBEE, BbEe, and BbEE are black dogs (with black pigment): BBEe is black carrying recessive cream BBEE is a black dog BbEe is black carrying recessive cream and recessive brown BbEE is black carrying recessive brown The gene affecting silvering (V/v) will fade black to blue or silver
