Poop Firming #101

Hi Keith - Pup with no holding power is certainly par for the course. My 2 doodlets literally could not get away from the food bowl. I would have to hover until they finished and then run with them out the door exhibiting great excitement to keep them from squatting. "Ah, Swarl, Dear, what are you doing???" There is no pride or shame when it comes to managing puppy poop. !!!!

anyway, the question you asked: Pups poop a lot. Diarrhea refers to the consistency and obviously the more liquied, the hard a time the pup has in keeping clean.

Rice
Cooked chicken or hamb
Pumpkin Pie filling w/o any spices
Pepto Bismol

All the above help. Our regimen is start with only white rice cooked in beef broth. As much as the pup wants to eat. Feed until poop is firm. Start adding cooked protein slowly. If poop remains firm after a few days, start mixing in regular kibble food. (pups need the crunch of kibble. not canned). It should take you 5 days of gradual increase of kibble and gradual decrease of rice and chicken to ease her over to her original diet.

You are going to use this info for the next 12 years or so. What you are doing is feeding stopper-uppers and giving the irritated intestines a chance to heal.

With my adults, who are much much hardier intestinally speaking, I will give pepto bismol at first sign of loose poops and rice mixed into their kibbles, or maybe a heaping tablespoon of pumpkin. With pups I am much more conservative and go to 100% rice right away. They get stressed easily and diarrhea becomes a serious health threat much more quickly than in an adult.

Hope this helps.
